The Surrey German Language School kicked off its new school year last Saturday, welcoming an impressive group of students and families. With 182 students enrolled, including 22 adults, the lobby was abuzz with excitement as families gathered to mark the beginning of a new German language year.
Principal Axel Rechlin opened the day with a welcoming speech, addressing the large crowd with enthusiasm and pride. His words set a positive tone for the school year, emphasizing the growing interest for the German language and culture among both young and adult learners.
During the event, we bid farewell to two dedicated board members and volunteers, Annabelle Devos and Tracey Dye. Annabelle was not only an active member of the board but also played a key role in the choir and Christmas theatre productions. Their contributions to the school will be deeply missed.
Board Member Annabelle’s last act of duty was the presentation of the volunteer opportunities. The school is facing a decline in the number of volunteers. With the support of more volunteers, we can continue to foster a sense of community and cultural appreciation for the upcoming school year.
Deputy Consul General, Hans Stocker presented the Language Diploma 1 certificates to the successful recipients.
Special congratulations to all the students who received their DSD 1 language certificates last Saturday! A DSD 1 is recognized as proof of the required German language skills for admission to a Studienkolleg in Germany, which can lead to studying at one of Germany’s tuition-free universities.
After the opening remarks, students eagerly set off to their classrooms, meeting their new teachers and classmates. While the students got acquainted with their new surroundings, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place.
During the meeting, four new board members were elected, bringing fresh ideas and perspectives to the team. President Fred Voglmaier and Vice President Tilmann Glimm continue their volunteer roles, joined by returning volunteer board directors Monica Herie and Thomas Kuehn, ensuring continuity and strong leadership.
The first day of school not only marked the beginning of a new school year but also underscored the strong sense of community that defines the Surrey German Language School.
With new teachers, board members, and a growing student body, the school is set for an exciting and successful year ahead.
The Surrey German Language School is starting this new school year with great enthusiasm. I’m proud to announce that we have our highest enrollment numbers since COVID, with 182 students. Before our Annual General Meeting, we distributed the DSD 1 certificates to 5 successful recipients with the assistance of Deputy Consul Mr. Stocker.
This year, we are excited to welcome three new teachers, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to our classrooms. Additionally, we have gained four new members for our board, further strengthening our leadership and support.
All signs point to a successful and rewarding year ahead, and I’m confident that together, we will continue to grow and thrive as a community.”
Axel Rechlin, Principal
